This summer, I had noticed that whenever I summited a big peak, backpacked for miles on end, or did a trail run at a high altitude, I noticed that I would start to feel light headed and weak. That is NOT something you want happening at 10,000 + feet! I would drink plenty of water, eat snacks, yet I still didn't feel 100%. I knew I needed something else, but wasn't sure what it could be.

 

My hiking friends suggested I look into drinking electrolytes. I knew about them, but had always thought they were for hard-core athletes - people running 50+ miles a day, climbing the tallest mountains, biking more than 100 miles, etc. I didn't think that being just a hiker would make that much of a difference. But I thought, what the heck, might as well try them and see if it helped with my lightheaded-ness. Learning that a mere 2% loss is body weight through sweat while exercising has been known to decrease exercise performance, I knew I had to find a solution.

While on the search for the best electrolytes in the outdoor industry, I came across a brand called NUUN. Pronounced like "noon", trying these electrolytes stood out to me for a few reasons.

The Tri Berry flavor wasn't very sweet, and it tasted a little more carbonated than the other flavors. It was a very light taste - sometimes this is nice when you are hiking or running and can't stomach drinking something overly sweet.

This was my second favorite flavor out of the 4 variations I tried. I love anything berry flavored, and this mix not only provided for the flavor I enjoy most, but it also provided me with the energy to keep pushing towards the peak.

This was my favorite flavor out of the 4 variations I tried. Just the right amount of sweetness, and  there's just something about a cherry-limeade drink that reminds me of summer.

The Tropical flavor had the perfect amount of light sweetness mixed with light carbonation. I drank this over the course of my 5 day backpacking adventure, and felt it really helped keep me hydrated in high altitude terrain.
